David Smith is a senior partner of McShane & Bowie who heads the real estate practice group. David's primary practice is commercial real estate development with a broad scope that includes nearly 40 years of experience in the purchase, sale and exchange of real estate, commercial and residential real estate development, zoning and land use planning, construction contracts and liens, financing, and leasing. In the post 2008 environment, his practice has come to include representation of owners and developers in their banking and financing arrangements including workouts and restructuring. David enjoys a wide range of clients, from commercial developers to non-profit corporations.
He has been listed in Who's Who of Lawyers in America and since 2007 as a Michigan Super Lawyer (New York Times listing based on peer evaluation). He received his J.D. from Washington University School of Law (St. Louis) and his B.A. degree from Denison University. David was an officer in the US Army 1970-1972.
